What is/was Academic art?
Academic art has strict training methods based on classical theory. when going trough the
way of any art academia, there are certain protocols you need to follow.
Evolution: Right from stone age times to modern history, the practice of art has been evolving
all over the world. but then the academic art mainly evolved under the influence of European nations.
The first academy of art was founded in Florence in Italy by Cosimo I de' Medici,
on 13 January 1563, under the influence of the architect Giorgio Vasari who called
it the Accademia e Compagnia delle Arti del Disegno (Academy and Company for the Arts of Drawing).
Training: Young artists spent around four years in rigorous training, Drawings and paintings
of the nude, called "académies", were the basic building blocks of academic art and the procedure
for learning to make them was clearly defined.
Most academies focused on drawing as the basis for both painting and sculpture, and
students practiced drawing casts of classical sculptures before they could move on to drawing
a live model. Students could not begin to paint until they had proven themselves to be adept
in drawing. The academies also emphasized the intellectual development of young artists by
offering courses in history and philosophy.
Challenges: Academic art was criticized for :
- Being based on idealistic clichés and representing mythical and legendary motives
while contemporary social concerns were being ignored.
- The "false surface" of paintings—the objects depicted looked smooth, slick, and
idealised—showing no real texture.
- After the oil sketch, the artist would produce the final painting with the
academic "finish", changing the painting to meet stylistic standards and attempting to idealise
the images and add perfect detail.
eventually the modern art movement pushed academic art aside.
What is Modern art or free painting?
The term modern art provides experiencing with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas
about the nature of materials and functions of art. A tendency away from the narrative, which
was characteristic for the traditional arts, toward abstraction is characteristic of much modern
art. More recent artistic production is often called Contemporary art or Postmodern art.
Evolution: Radicals in their time, early Impressionists violated the rules of academic painting.
They constructed their pictures from freely brushed colours that took precedence over lines
and contours.
They also painted realistic scenes of modern life, and often painted outdoors. Previously,
still lifes and portraits as well as landscapes were usually painted in a studio.[1] The
Impressionists found that they could capture the momentary and transient effects of sunlight
by painting in free air. This gave rise to a new art called ‘En plein air ’ or which means "in the
open air". Artists have long painted outdoors . The popularity of outdoor painting has
endured throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century cherished all over the
world.
Journey from Academic to Free art?
It is important to note that most Realists and Impressionists and others among the
early avant-garde who rebelled against academism were mostly students in academic
According to me, The ethical contribution of academic art to society is still cherished.
Even today academic art styles are emphasized and practised in art schools and institutions.
Both of these areas of study are considered to be important foundations for aspiring
artists.
